College Football 27 - Ultimate Team 27 Deep Dive

June 4, 2026

BREAKDOWN

Hey there College Football Fans, welcome back to the Campus Huddle, your source for all of the latest updates straight from the development team! Today, we are going to talk about all things Ultimate Team in EA Sports College Football 27! We have a lot we want to share with you including, a new upgrade system, quality of life changes, new ways to interact with objectives, an update to your twitch rewards, a preview of some content you can expect at launch, and more! Let’s get right into it.

THE NEW UPGRADE SYSTEM

College Football 27 Ultimate Team introduces the New Upgrade System, a redesigned approach to player progression built around flexibility, customization, and streamlined item management. The system expands how player items develop over time by introducing Skill Points, archetype-driven progression paths, attribute-specific upgrades, and quality-of-life improvements that reduce friction throughout the upgrade process.

The New Upgrade System is designed to create more meaningful player development decisions while making it easier to manage items throughout the year.

SKILL POINTS

Skill Points (SP) are the foundation of the New Upgrade System. These points are tied directly to individual player items and can be used to improve multiple aspects of an item, including:

  • Dynamic Upgrade Paths
  • Attribute Upgrade Paths
  • Ability Slots
  • Chemistry Slots

Keep reading to find out more about these different aspects.

Skill Points can be earned through gameplay by completing Objectives on Items (see below), exchanging tokens/items, and purchasing with other currencies. This creates a progression system where items can grow through continued gameplay.

Each item can have a Max Skill Point cap. Once you’ve earned up to the cap, you’re locked from earning more SP unless that cap is increased (stay tuned).

Some upgradable player items may utilize a different currency (coins/training) for Chemistry and Ability upgrades instead of Skill Points.

DYNAMIC UPGRADE BY ARCHETYPE

One of the biggest additions in the New Upgrade System are Dynamic Upgrade Paths. These paths are based on position archetypes and every path will have its own OVR. Archetype upgrades improve groups of ratings associated with a specific playstyle, allowing similarly rated players to evolve into very different builds over time. Each individual upgrade step will randomly increase a subset of ratings within that archetype’s rating group, creating more variation and differentiation as player items progress.

For example, two Halfback player items may begin with similar overall ratings, but develop differently depending on their archetype upgrade path:

  • An East/West Playmaker Halfback upgrade path may focus on acceleration, change of direction, ball carrier vision, and juke ratings.
  • A Contact Seeker Halfback upgrade path may focus on trucking, break tackle, stiff-arm, and strength.
    • There may be some overlap across archetypes for the same position as certain attributes are vital to the position regardless of playstyle.

With Dynamic Paths, you’ll know what the next OVR is, but the attributes that are upgraded to get you there will vary.

OVR & ATTRIBUTE CAPS

Another addition coming with the Dynamic Upgrade Path system is OVR and Attribute caps. Each player item will have a set max OVR.

Attribute caps are set by a Dynamic Path. Each individual attribute will have its own cap. Let’s take two Wide Receiver paths for example, a Speedster path may have a max Speed cap of 90 while a Route Artist path’s Speed cap is 88.

Once an item reaches a cap on a specific attribute, that attribute will no longer be upgraded as you progress down that path. Similarly, once a path on an item reaches the max OVR, no more path upgrades can occur. These caps can be increased using a new mechanic that we’ll explain shortly.

If you’re not a fan of how an item’s upgrades turned out or just want to explore a different path, you have the option to respec that item and get back the SP you’ve used.

This is the same player as the screenshot above. His Bump and Run max OVR was an 80, while his Zone max OVR is 79.

ATTRIBUTE PATHS

In addition to Dynamic Paths, we’ve kept a similar system to the one you’ve become accustomed to in Ultimate Team. These are Attribute Paths.

This is a single path where every step will have defined attributes that increase a set amount. You’ll know upfront when certain attributes will be upgraded and by how much. You might prefer this option if you have a very specific ability in mind which has a set stat requirement as you’ll know exactly when this player will hit the threshold.

Most player items will start with either an attribute path or a dynamic path, but there are ways to add additional paths. Stay tuned later this year to learn more!

ABILITIES & CHEMISTRIES

Skill Points (and other currencies) can also be used to unlock individual equippables: chemistries, abilities, and slots alike.

Under the new system, both slots and individual abilities/chemistries are usually limited by OVR and/or specific attribute thresholds. That means you may have to progress down upgrade paths before certain equippables become available.

We want to encourage players to carefully evaluate the balance between Attributes and Equippables since Abilities and Chemistries are upgraded through the same SP pool as Attributes.

QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS

The New Upgrade System also introduces several quality-of-life improvements based on feedback with the previous system.

LET’S RESPEC

Items can now have all applied upgrades respecced at once, resetting any upgraded paths, purchased abilities or chemistries and giving you back all spent skill points to reallocate on that player. This allows items to be reset in a few clicks instead of removing upgrades individually one step at a time.

This improvement should make switching between different player builds significantly faster.

UPGRADE MULTIPLE STEPS AT ONCE

Path upgrades no longer need to be clicked through one step at a time. Multiple steps can be upgraded simultaneously when enough Skill Points are available to do so.

This change reduces repetitive menu interactions and creates a smoother upgrade experience, especially as items gain access to longer progression paths.

OBJECTIVES ON ITEMS

Objectives on Items introduce a new way for select player items to earn progression directly through gameplay across Ultimate Team.

By completing objectives tied to specific player items, additional Skill Points can be earned and invested back into those same items. This provides an avenue for continued on-field usage to contribute directly to an item’s growth and customization.

VIEW FROM LINEUP SCREEN

Objectives can be viewed directly from the lineup screen, making it easier to monitor progression while managing your roster and making lineup decisions.

This allows roster construction and objective tracking to remain closely connected throughout the team-building experience.

FAVORITE OBJECTIVES

16 Item objectives (8 for offense/defense) can be favorited in the lineup screen to allow for real time tracking specific player progression goals during games in Ultimate Team.

VIEW AT PREPLAY

These objectives can also be viewed during preplay, giving additional visibility into active progression goals before entering gameplay, helping players reference tracked objectives without needing to exit into separate menus.

EVOS

We wanted to touch on something that is coming soon after launch, stay tuned to @EASports_CUT on X and a future Campus Huddle to know when this feature will arrive. We wanted to cross our T’s and dot our I’s on this feature because of how impactful we expect it will be.

EVOS are one of the most unique new features in Ultimate Team 27. They allow you to transform and enhance players in ways never before possible, opening up new strategies and possibilities for your lineup. Evos can increase player OVR caps, unlock new upgrade paths, add or improve abilities, expand chemistry options, and add more objectives to complete for an item.

EVOS also allow you to extend the lifespan of players on your roster. Instead of replacing players as new content releases, you can continue to invest in the players you enjoy using, upgrading them to remain viable and competitive deep into the season. Whether it’s a favorite player, a theme team piece, or a player filling a key gap, Evos give you the ability to keep your players competitive.

Some Evos can also be chained together, allowing you to stack multiple upgrades on a single player. This means you can add new abilities, expand chemistry options, reduce Ability Point costs, and unlock entirely new roles. Your player doesn’t just improve - they evolve into something completely unique.

MULTIPLE UPGRADE PATHS

Some EVO items will allow players to have multiple Upgrade Paths available at one time. Want to combine the benefits of a Pocket Passer and a Pure Runner on your QB? In this system, you’ll have that choice. You could even add the static boosts of a new Attribute Path on top.

For player items with multiple Dynamic paths, the highest rated path will determine the archetype and OVR that shows on the front of the item.

LAUNCH DAY BONUSES

CUT DRAFT MODE

At the end of January we launched CUT Draft Mode for EA Sports College Football 26. If you haven't had a chance to experience it, here’s a quick recap: CUT Draft Mode allows you to compete head to head against real people using custom lineups built through a shared draft pool. As a new addition to this iteration of Draft mode, you and your opponent select from the same pool of player items, and if one player selects someone they’re out of the pool for both of you. For Solo Drafts, you’ll draft directly against the CPU.

MORE SETS

Based on your feedback from 26 we’ll be adding more trade-up set options into 27. You will have more opportunities to trade in lower OVR players for higher OVR players with these in addition to the training store which will still be just as robust in 27. Some upgradable players will even allow you to trade a lower OVR player directly for Skill Points, like a trade-up set inside a player item.

CHEMISTRY OVERHAUL

Scheme and Team chemistry boost will no longer be impacting the Speed stat, but in exchange they will be impacting a higher number of other stats at +2 or higher boosts for 50/50 rather than only +1 and +2 boosts

STRATEGY ITEM OVERHAUL

This year we will be adding more core strategy items which impact team and scheme chemistries, and these core attribute impacting strategy items will mix buffs with debuffs so that you can take a more strategic approach to the use of strategy items.

MORE FIELD PASSES, MORE REWARDS

In our previous College Football titles, most of our content fed into the same season field pass (with a few exceptions). This year, most Friday content programs will have their own dedicated field passes with unique objectives and rewards. This means that as you play for rewards in the individual program pass, you’ll also be making progress in the season pass. More rewards for the same actions!

LIVE SEASON PROGRAMS

PROGRAM SYNERGY

This year we wanted some programs to feel like inter-connected experiences rather than fully separated content. Be on the lookout for pre-season programs with player items that adapt to the season after the program ends, and EVOs that can convert old players to custom chemistries and archetypes introduced later in the game.

REACTIVE CONTENT

We want to continue to lean into reactive content this year. Stars of the Week will make a return, highlighting the top players of the previous weekend’s performance. We also will be introducing a new live season program that will run alongside Stars of the Week and highlight the games we will have our eyes on right before they happen.

LAUNCH DAY

To get you geared up and ready for Day 0 of College Football 27 Ultimate Team, we wanted to give you a brief rundown of some of the content programs you can expect to see. Make sure you tune into a special CUT Reveal Stream on __ to see and learn even more!

CORE LEGENDS

EA Sports College Football graphic featuring a large metallic “UT” logo centered on a dark textured background with angular accents.

This year over 100 legendary College stars of the past will be available as player items from the very first day of Early Access. We want more players to have their schools represented and have access to their favorite names as soon as they hop in for the first time. Core legends are also upgradable with the new Dynamic Paths, so we’re looking forward to seeing the differences in how these player items evolve in different people’s lineups.

LEGENDS

Making its great return from our great return in College Football 25, Legends highlights legendary college football players of the past with unique player items, challenges, and events every Tuesday. Unlike Core Legends, the standard Legends will continue to release through the entire year, giving you the opportunity to add fresh faces to your lineup.

COUNTDOWN

Countdown celebrates our early access period, players get a countdown locker for free every day that they log in from 7/2 to 7/9, so make sure to check in daily! The Draft event will be live for Countdown, engage here to make progress in the Countdown field pass for early access exclusive rewards

SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT

Every Sunday we will spotlight a specific player who will receive a top tier card art treatment and challenges which highlight their history. Check in every season for a new art theme, and be on the lookout for standout players who fit these themes.

CORNERSTONES

Players will get to choose 1 of 6 free upgradable player items to build their team around. Each player item they can select from will boost a different set of attributes, and each player item dropped with the program will be designed to fit into 1 of those 6 chemistries. LTDs and the H2H champ can freely swap between all 6.

STARTUP UPDATES

We’ve also modified the welcoming process this year to make it feel less like we are holding your hand through the experience, and instead we will be guiding you through mechanics that you will naturally be discovering. No more railroading players into each screen without letting them choose where to go next!

NEW TWITCH REWARDS FOR A NEW JOURNEY

EA Sports College Football 27 graphic listing Campus Token Twitch Drops rewards and token conversion rates.

This year, we are revamping the reward structure for the Campus Tokens you received from watching your favorite creators on Twitch. In case you missed it, similar to the reward system from last year on EA Sports College Football 26, Campus Tokens will give you a flexible way to choose what rewards you want, when you want them. Do you want to redeem them immediately and receive familiar Twitch Packs? Or do you want to save up your tokens to earn some more impactful rewards. Before we go into additional details about what rewards you could earn, let's talk really quick about what Twitch Drops are.

Twitch Drops are a way for you to earn content just by watching your favorite creators! Make sure that you have your EA Account Linked to your Twitch Account which you can do here and then begin watching! Once you earn a reward, it will show up in your Twitch Inventory and from there you will be able to claim your reward! More information about drops can be found here

Back to talking about Campus Tokens! These tokens will act as a currency used to redeem specific Campus Token sets which you will be able to find under the “sets” tab. Earn Campus Tokens by watching select College Football 27 content on Twitch when drops are active. Worried about binder space? Don’t be! An option to convert 10 Campus Tokens can be converted into 1 Campus Super Token for added flexibility or vice versa. Also, Campus Token redemption sets will continue to update as new content drops in College Ultimate Team.

Giving you freedom to choose what Twitch rewards you want was a goal of ours and thanks to your feedback, we were able to dial in on which rewards were your favorite! Here is a list of what you will be able to redeem for your tokens this year!

You might notice there is a Unique Stars of the Season Player Item option, an announcement with details will come later this year!

We will still have the same opportunities to earn tokens this year through CFB Live! We are changing up how it will work compared to last year. Stay tuned to learn more!

TIME TO GET BUILDING

We can’t wait to see and hear your feedback about the features coming this year. But for now, the pencils are put down, and the team is hard at work giving you the Ultimate Team content you know and love. We can't wait to see how team building is impacted by these changes. We’ll see you on the field!
